Electrostimulation & Compex Glossary

A quick-reference guide explaining the clinical, athletic, and recovery terminology behind Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (EMS) and Compex Swiss technology.

  • EMS / NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation)

The delivery of controlled electrical impulses directly to motor nerves, triggering deep, involuntary muscle contractions. Used by athletes to build explosive strength, increase muscle volume, and accelerate muscle recovery without joint strain. Explore wired and wireless models in our Compex SP Series and SP units.

  • MI Technology (Muscle Intelligence)

Compex's patented sensor technology that diagnoses the specific physiological state of each muscle (rheobase and chronaxie) prior to stimulation, tailoring the pulse parameters perfectly to individual physiology.

  • MI-Scan

An automated pre-session scanning function. The device scans the connected muscle group in seconds and automatically calibrates stimulation parameters to match that specific muscle's sensitivity.

  • MI-Tens

A safety and optimization feature active during pain-relief programs. It continuously monitors muscle reaction and automatically caps intensity to prevent accidental muscle contractions, keeping the therapy purely analgesic.

  • MI-Autorange

Available on advanced wireless units (Compex SP 6.0 and SP 8.0). Automatically detects, sets, and maintains the minimum effective stimulation intensity needed for optimal conditioning results.

  • MI-Action

An interactive training mode that combines voluntary muscle effort with electrical stimulation. The device detects when you actively begin a muscle contraction and injects the electrical impulse precisely at that instant.

  • Active Recovery

A low-frequency recovery protocol (1–9 Hz) producing gentle, rhythmic muscle twitches. Acts as a circulatory pump to dramatically increase local blood flow, clear metabolic waste (lactic acid), and restore oxygen balance without fatiguing the central nervous system.

  • Capillarization

A specialized conditioning protocol designed to stimulate the formation of new capillary micro-vessels around muscle fibers, significantly enhancing aerobic capacity and endurance.

  • Hypertrophy & Potentiation

High-frequency training protocols that recruit up to 100% of motor units (including deep Type II fast-twitch fibers), preparing muscles for maximum power output before competition.
