Respiratory Muscle Training Glossary: Terms & Metrics

Respiratory Muscle Training (POWERbreathe & EMST)

RMT (Respiratory Muscle Training)

  • Targeted resistance conditioning of the muscles used for breathing (diaphragm, intercostals, abdominals). Designed to improve stamina, lower perceived exertion, and accelerate recovery.

IMT (Inspiratory Muscle Training)

  • Specific strength training focused exclusively on the inhalation phase. Overcomes calibrated resistance to strengthen the diaphragm and external intercostals (e.g., POWERbreathe PLUS and K Series).

EMT / EMST (Expiratory Muscle Strength Training)

  • Targeted conditioning focused on the exhalation phase against calibrated pressure. Enhances expiratory force, cough strength, vocal cord control, and abdominal wall activation (e.g., EMST 150, POWERbreathe EX 1).

MIP / PImax (Maximal Inspiratory Pressure)

  • A clinical diagnostic metric measuring the maximum negative pressure (in cmH2O) a person can generate during inhalation. Used to determine baseline diaphragm strength and track training progression.

MEP / PEmax (Maximal Expiratory Pressure)

  • The maximum positive pressure generated during forceful exhalation. Indicates the strength of the abdominal wall and expiratory muscles.

cmH2O (Centimeters of Water)

  • The standard medical unit of pressure used to calibrate respiratory trainers and measure lung muscle strength.

Breathe-Link Software

  • PC diagnostic and training software paired with electronic POWERbreathe K Series devices, providing live visual wave feedback, power output (Watts), and historical data analysis.
